Pte. Henry J. Murphy 77th Battalion Sept. 15, 1916

 Henry Murphy was born on October 01, 1897 in Dummer Township.  His parents, Henry H. Murphy and Jane Chatten were farmers.

He attested on August 19, 1915 in Cobourg in the 77th Overseas Battalion.  At the time he listed his mother as next of kin and living in Norwood, Ontario.  His occupation was labourer and he was not married.  Henry indicated that he had one year of military experience serving in the Home Guard.  He was 18 years old, stood 5 foot 6 inches tall; had medium complexion, light brown eyes and light hair.  He was a Baptist.

Pte. Murphy was killed in action on September 15, 1916, during an attack Southwest of Courcellette.  He was, at the time in the ranks of the 21st Battalion.  If he was buried, it was never officially recorded, his name appears on the Vimy memorial to the Canadian soldiers who have no known grave.  He also appears on the Dummer Township Cenotaph.
