Charles Wellington Collins was born
in Centre Dummer, on May 20th 1899. His father, William John Collins
and mother, Jane Evans, farmed in the township.
The family might have moved to another farm on lot 1, concession 1 of the
township in 1911.

Charles was living at 474 Montrose
Ave. in Toronto and working as a salesman when he enlisted there on May 23rd,
1918. He joined with the 71st
Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. He
was 19 years old, single and had no previous military experience. He was described as 5 foot, 6 inches with a
fair complexion, brown eyes and light brown hair. He was a Baptist. He listed his next of kin as Jane Collins,
mother, as living in Peterborough.
Gunner Collins entered the No. 2
Artillery Depot and after 5 months training at Stanley Barracks, Toronto,
entered the hospital suffering from Influenza.
He recovered and left the hospital four days later on November 6th
1918. Later that month Collins was examined and
determined to have hyperthyroidism and symptoms of slight tremors. He was discharged as medically unfit from
Exhibition Camp, Toronto, on December 03, 1918.
