William was called up under the Military Service Act and reported to Barriefield, Ontario on May 17, 1918.  There he was given a medical examination and declared fit for service. He was just over 23 years old, stood 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 150 pounds. He had a medium complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. He was single and his religion was Presbyterian.  He joined the 1st Eastern Depot Battalion, until he was assigned to the 73rd Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery on May 27th.  He was sent to Petawawa for training sometime afterward.  It was here on September 9 1918 that he was re-assigned to B Co. of the 2nd Canadian Tank Battalion.

Cuffe embarked Quebec, Canada aboard the H.M.S Victoria on October 4, 1918 and landed in Avonsmouth, England 14 days later.
He took sick with influenza on October 18th and spent 31 days in the Red Cross Hospital in Naunton, Gloucester.  On November 18 he was sent to convalesce at the No 11. Canadian General Hospital at Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe, England.  By this time the war had ended and Cuffe was sent to M.D.C. Wing 3 at Kimmel Park in North Wales.  He lingered here until June 24 when he boarded the ship Cassandra in Glasgow Scotland and sailed for Canada.

William Cuffe returned to Canada and continued his employment as a butter maker.  He married Josephine McIleva at St. Stephen’s Church in Toronto on September 1st 1924.
