Hilliard William
Doig was born Warsaw, Ontario on November 04 1895 to parents George Doig and
Mary nee. Ferguson. The family last
appears to be living in Dummer Township in the 1901 census, sometime after the
Doig family moved to the city of Peterborough, Ontario.
By
1917, George, then living at 222 King Street in Peterborough with his parents
was employed as a plumber. He was called
to report to Peterborough for a medical examination under the Military Service
Act of 1917.
He
reported for his examination on November 6th 1917. He was found medically fit for service and
classified as an A.2. At the time he was
22 years old, stood 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 132 pounds. He had a fair
complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair.
He was single, and a Presbyterian.
Having
passed the initial medical, Doig was called to report to Barriefield Camp, in
Belleville, Ontario on August 23rd, There he was assigned to the 1st
Depot Eastern Ontario Regiment. He began
training and waited further posting as to which battalion he would join in France.
Doig
was still in Belleville when the War ended.
He was discharged on November 26 1918 in Belleville, Ontario and
returned to his former occupation. He
married Annie Jeanette Chapman of Peterborough in the city of Peterborough on
November 12 1924. The couple lived at
221 Brock Street in Peterborough.
