Michael Raymond Carlow    3058857

Michael “Ray” Carlow was born in Dummer Township on May 02, 1897.  He was one of nine children born to Edward and Annie Carlow.  The Carlow family farmed lot 5 on the 1st Concession in Dummer Township (often referred to as Indian River).
Ray was still living and working on the family farm when he was drafted under the Military Service Act, on May 09, 1918 into the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment.   He reported to Barriefield, Ontario and after a medical examination was considered fit for service.  At the time he was 21 years old, stood 5 foot 9 inches tall, and weighed 135 pounds. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.  He was single, had no previous military experience and was a Roman Catholic.

He trained with the 1st Depot Battalion at Barriefield, but was reported A.W.L. (Absent without Leave) for the majority of June and forfeited 22 days pay.  His service records show that he returned to duty sometime at the end of June as he had a tooth extracted by a military dentist on the 29th of that month.
Carlow embarked Canada for England with a draft of men on July 06, 1918.  He arrived there 18 days later and was taken on strength to the 6th Reserve Battalion at Seaford, England on 22 July 1918.  He remained with this reserve unit, waiting his turn to head to the front as a reinforcement for a battalion already fighting there.  While waiting he entered no. 14 Canadian Hospital at Eastbourne on August 24 1918 with the mumps. He took over a month to recover and was discharged on October 2nd 1918.  Carlow spent the remaining days of the war in the reserve pool in England and never made it to the front.  He remained in Britain during demobilization and returned to Canada on July 26 1919.
Carlow returned to the family farm in Indian River and continued to farm there as he had before he was drafted.  On the 27th of September 1927, in Downyville (near Lindsay), he married Mary Catherine Hamilton, a school teacher from Emily, Ontario.  Carlow took his bride home to Indian River where he continued to farm until his death on November 10, 197.
