Douglas was called up under the Military Service Act and ordered to report to Peterborough for a medical inspection on October 25 1917. He was 20 years old, stood 5 feet 8 and weighed 145 pounds. He was described as being in good physical development with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.  At the time he was single, Presbyterian and was employed as a farmer. The next step in the drafting process came on May 9th 1918, when Theodore reported to Barriefield Camp in Kingston May 9 1918, and was sworn into the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment as the rank of private.  Douglas remained at the camp training and completing instruction while awaiting orders to sail overseas and join the Canadian Contingent in England.

Douglas left Canada on August 03 1918 and arrived in Liverpool, England 12 days later.  Upon arriving he was posted to the 3rd Canadian Engineer Reserve Depot at Seaford to be trained as an engineer.  He was present there during the cessation of hostilities and the end of the War.  He was transferred to the Headquarters Canadian Corps Camp at Bramshott England on April 20 1919.

Theodore Douglas was given notice to prepare to proceed to Canada for discharge. He was given a medical examination on June 4 1919 at Bramshott Camp, in preparation for disembarking England.  At the medical board it was noted that Douglas complained of having had both legs hurt in 1915, and often tired after much walking, but complained of no disability.  He left Liverpool on June 12 1919 aboard H.M.T. Royal George and arrived in Halifax nine days later.  He was formally discharged at Halifax on June 27 1919.

Theodore moved back to the family farm in Dummer and later married Marmie Anderson on January 15 1924.  At the time he was working as a telephone patrolman.  Theodore died on December 26 1974.
