Alexander Graham was born on January 01, 1897 in Warsaw, Ontario to parents Gavin and Annie Eliza (Crowe) Graham. He grew up on West Peterboro St. in the village of Warsaw where his father was a merchant.
Graham moved from Warsaw sometime
after 1911 and was living in Lakefield, Ontario, when he was called to report
under the Military Service Act for a medical inspection on October 30th
1917. He was 20 ½ years old, stood 5
feet, 6 ½ inches tall and weighed 122 pounds.
He had a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He stated his occupation as a farmer, his
religion as Presbyterian, and also declared that he had no previous military
experience. He was considered category
A.2 by the medical board and fit for overseas service.
He reported to the 1st
Eastern Ontario Depot Battalion at Barriefield Camp (Kingston) on May 10th
1918 for training. He was selected as
part of a draft that proceeded overseas on July 7th 1918. He arrived in England aboard the S.S.
Tunisian on July 22, 1918 and proceeded to join the 6th Reserve
Battalion at Seaforth Camp.
Alexander remained at the camp in
England for the duration of the war until departing for Canada on the 23rd
of June 1919 and was formally discharged from service on July 4th.
Alexander would later move to Douro
Township after the war to continue farming.
It was there that he married Helen Carter on October 23rd
1926. Alexander Carter died in 1983 and
is buried in Lakefield Cemetery.
