Gilbert was living at R.R.#3 Lakefield,  when he was drafted under the Military Service Act on November 16th, 1917.  He reported to his medical inspection in Peterborough and was listed as A.1 and fit for service. He was 21 years of age, stood 5 foot 6 inches and weighed 115 pounds.  He had brown eyes, light brown hair and a dark complexion.  He was a farmer by trade, unmarried, a Presbyterian and had no previous military experience.

Gilbert arrived at Barriefield Camp in Kingston on May 17, 1918 and was attached to the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment for training.  He was at the camp close to a month, at which time he entered Ongawanda Military Hospital suffering from a chest pains, a persistent cough, and shortness of breath.  Doctors there made a thorough examination, and recorded the following notes:
Douglas was suspected of having Tuberculosis, but further tests came up negative.  He was discharged back to Barriefield on June 10, 1918 to continue his training.  His respite was short, as 9 days later he was re-admitted to Ongwanada hospital, this time being diagnosed with dyspepsia, a condition of impaired digestion.  His symptoms were recorded by physicians below:
He recovered sufficiently enough to be discharged back to his unit on August 5th.  Pte. Douglas remained at Barriefield Camp until the end of the war, and was discharged on December 31st, 1918.  He returned back the family farm in Smith Township for several years.
By 1924 Douglas moved to the Niagara region of the United States. He married Mary Agnes Young in Niagara Falls in 1925.  Gilbert Llewellyn Douglas died on the 9th of February 1949 in Youngstown, New York at age 52.
