William Oliver Douglas 3060638
William
Douglas was born in Warsaw, Ontario on November 21st, 1890 to
parents William Walter Douglas and Ada Garlick.
The family farmed on the West ½ of lot 12 concession 2 in Dummer
Township.
William was living in the village of Warsaw
when he was drafted under the Military Service Act on July 2nd
1918. He reported for a medical
inspection at Barriefield Camp in Kingston, where he was considered Category C.1
, which meant that he was only medically fit for garrison duty in Canada. He was 27 years of age, stood 5 foot 6 inches
tall and weighed 135 pounds. He was
described as having blue eyes, light brown hair and a fair complexion. He was a cheese maker by trade, unmarried, a
Presbyterian and had no previous military experience. His records indicate the presence of a scar
below his right knee, but do not indicate the reason that William was
classified as unfit for duty overseas.

William was attached to the 1st
Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment at Barriefield, where he would have
joined his young brother, Gilbert, who had been called up for service the
previous November. William
stayed on at Barriefield until he was discharged on August 18, 1918. Though his
discharge papers indicate the reason of discharge as “demobilization”, at the
time the war did not end for another 3 months.
William returned to the village Warsaw as
continued his work as a cheese-maker. He
married Ella Russell of Douro in 1923 and moved to that town ship shortly thereafter. William Douglas died on May 18 1972, he is
buried in St. Mark’s Cemetery in Warsaw, Ontario.
